Call for artists: Thomas Hart Benton Art Competition and Exhibition

Neosho Arts Council is pleased to present the 22nd Annual Thomas Hart Benton Art Competition and Exhibition this coming September and October in Neosho.

“We are excited to presented this area tradition,” Sarah Serio, NAC Board Member said. “We will be awarding over $1,000 in prize money to area artists including $500 for Best of Show and a solo exhibition at the Big Spring Gallery.” Prizes also include first through fourth place and a wide array of merit awards.

"This event was designed to honor Thomas Hart Benton, a Neosho native, while creating an opportunity for regional artists to exhibit their work and be seen by the community."

NAC encourages all artists working in a 2D medium to take part in this event. "This event is a great one to take part in if you've never entered a show or entered a hundred. We are there to help artists enter this event and are more than willing to answer questions and help get works ready for exhibition."

Area artists are eligible to enter in either the "Emerging" category or "Professional" category. The "Emerging" category is for artists who are students or who are not represented by galleries or have held professional exhibitions. The "Professional" category is open to all artists. All entries must be original works by the artist, not previously entered in this competition or shown at the Big Spring Gallery, and completed in the past three years.

The online entry is designed to resemble online entry forms from large exhibitions to give artist the chance to learn to navigate this type of process while being able to easily get assistance at any point in the process. For those artists not yet up to entering online NAC offered a two day window for in person entry during the art drop off period.

This year’s judge is Neal Barbour, Director of Youth Education at the Lawrence Arts Center and a practicing artist in his community in Kansas.

The deadline to enter is August 31 for early bird registration and September 2 at the door.
