2017 marks the centennial of the Russian Revolutions of 1917, when uprising and revolt in Russia would eventually end centuries of Tsarist rule and usher in the political and social changes that would become the foundation of the Soviet Union. At times celebrated and at other times vilified by the state for his musical output, composer Dmitri Shostakovich struggled to create honest art in a dangerous totalitarian regime. We open our season with his tempestuous Fifth Symphony and Tchaikovsky’s virtuosic and lilting Violin Concerto.
