About the show: Paul's church was nothing more than a modest storefront. Now he presides over a congregation of thousands, with classrooms for Sunday School, a coffee shop in the lobby, and a baptismal font as big as a swimming pool. Today should be a day of celebration. But Paul is about to preach a sermon that will shake the foundations of his church's belief. An honest play about faith in America—and the trouble with changing your mind.
Roles (3 men, 2 women + choir), all ethnicities highly encouraged to audition:
Pastor Paul (40’s-50’s) Pastor of a very big church; professorial in demeanor, definitely does not have the stereotypical televangelist vibe.
Associate Pastor Joshua (mid-20’s-30’s) Younger than Pastor Paul; a bit green, but definitely charismatic and very earnest.
Elizabeth (late 30’s-50’s) Pastor Paul's wife; an important leader of the church; resolute and actually quite angry at Paul; she holds her cards close to her chest until she doesn't.
Jay (40’s-70’s) collegial, a long-time friend of Paul's; the diplomat, trying his best to make all parties happy.
Jenny (30’s-40’s) Single mother; whip-smart and honest; has a lot of questions for Paul and the direction he's taking the church. Also a member of the choir.
Choir (12 voices, SATB, ages 18 and up, all ethnicities). Vocalists interested in being part of the onstage choir are asked to contact the music director for more information in early January 2018, by e-mailing him at firstname.lastname@example.org.
