Artsfest on Walnut Street offers expanded programming, hours

Artsfest May 6 and 7 on Historic Walnut Street

Artsfest on Walnut Street, southwest Missouri's largest fine arts festival, will be held Saturday, May 6 from 10 a.m.–8 p.m. and Sunday, May 7 from 10 a.m.–5 p.m. on Walnut Street from National Avenue to just east of Kimbrough Avenue. This marks the 37th year for the event, which draws approximately 20,000 patrons each year. Artsfest is presented by Great Southern Bank and the Springfield Regional Arts Council and managed by the Downtown Springfield Association.

Expanded programming, hours

Artsfest's music festival-inspired Kentwood Green performance space will stay open to patrons until 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 6 to accommodate expanded programming. The space is sponsored by TransLand and will feature local performers throughout Artsfest. The festival will also feature a new signature entrance at the intersection of National Avenue and Walnut Street, guiding attendees through two enormous towers provided by Pinnacle Sign Group.

Pre-sale tickets available now

Admission at the gate is $5 for adults, and children 12 and under are free. Discounted pre-sale tickets are on sale now at area McDonald’s restaurants and at 417Tix.com.

Over 140 featured artists

More than 140 artists from 16 states will be displaying, selling and competing for over $5,000 in cash awards. This year’s festival boasts 87 returning artists and 58 artists who are new to the festival. Mediums featured include: wood, glass, clay, printmaking, paper, jewelry, photography, metal, painting, drawing, fiber and mixed medium.

Returning for 2017, the Live Art Area will feature 12 artists creating art throughout the festival hours Saturday and Sunday. The finished art will be displayed at The Creamery Arts Center in May and is available for purchase.

Family-friendly fun

Festival-goers are encouraged to explore and shop artists’ booths, enjoy cuisine from local restaurants and food vendors and participate in kid-friendly activities. The festival will feature dynamic regional talent with over 60 performance groups on 5 stages. Kids can take part in a free, hands-on art activity in the Kid’s Art Zone. Children will have the opportunity to express themselves by designing their own mask to wear at the festival.
