Final weekend for the audience favorite
TINTYPES “...an airy evening of musical Americana.” Return to turn of the century America, when the innocent, slower-paced days of ice cream socials and hoop skirts are giving way to a bustling world of automobiles, electricity and the telephone. The story of these changing times comes to life in a tuneful, high-spirited brew of popular songs from 1890 to 1917. A red, white and blue summer musical.
“The main attraction is the parade of venerable songs both famous and obscure that reveal the values of the period. The five singer/dancers at the Vandivort are good, especially when harmonizing...Director Gary Lyons plays Charlie, the struggling immigrant whose path crosses with Emma Goldman (Rachel Gitel) and Anna Held (Melissa Slamb). Conzy Mitchell-Burns' Susannah represents those of the lowest economic level, while Shawn Teague's T.R. (or "Teddy Da Roose") stands for the power elite. Act Two's "money" segment is one highlight, with Lyons shining in "When I'd Be Satisfied With Life," Teague blustering his way through "I Want What I Want When I Want It" and the female trio showing early feminist spark in "Fifty-Fifty." Gitel scores with her clear-eyed take on "Jonah Man," followed by the company's summary of their financial woes as "When It's All Goin' Out and Nothin' Comin' In."...any show with such tunes as "Meet Me in St. Louis," "Wabash Cannon Ball," "America the Beautiful," "Wayfaring Stranger," "A Bird in a Gilded Cage," "Bill Bailey," "You're a Grand Old Flag" and "The Yankee Doodle Boy" should appeal to folks looking for an airy evening of musical Americana.”–Larry T. Collins, Springfield News-Leader
