Claymobile's Ice Cream Social at the Creamery

Thursday, July 17, 2008

On Saturday, August 2nd, from 2pm to 5pm, at the Creamery Arts Center (across from Hammons Field), the Springfield Regional Arts Council and the Springfield Pottery will sponsor an old-fashioned Ice Cream Social called "Treat The Arts", to benefit the Claymobile, a mobile ceramic education outreach program of the two organizations.

Instructors from the Springfield Pottery who take the Claymobile out to schools and other community events are busily creating handmade one-of-a-kind pottery bowls which participants can fill up with all the ice cream they can eat on Saturday and then take the bowl home as a souvenir of the event. Ice cream is being donated by Hiland Dairy Foods and music by the Garbonzos will also create a festive atmosphere for eventgoers.

While slurping down ice cream, participants can enjoy the exhibition of art in the Creamery Exhibition Hall which features works by the Springfield Pottery instructors including Sherri Alexander, Michael Bishop, Ashley Byers, Andrew Eggers, Josh Heaton, Joel Harrison, Brian Lynch, Nathan Falter and Jennifer Falter, owners of Springfield Pottery. The event opens the night before, August 1st, with a free reception from 6 to 9pm as part of First Friday Art Walk.

"We're hoping for a really good turnout," says Sandra CH Smith, executive director of the Arts Council. "This is one of the few ways we have of raising funds for this excellent program that teaches young children how to work with clay and create masterpieces of their own."

It is recommended that you purchase tickets in advance so that the instructors can craft enough bowls for the occasion. Adult tickets are $25, children are $10 and these can be purchased from either Springfield Pottery, 416 S. Campbell Ave., (417-864-4677) or from Springfield Regional Arts Council, 411 N. Sherman Parkway, (417-862-ARTS). Tickets can be ordered in advance with Visa or Mastercard (with $2 handling fee) from the Arts Council.
