Friday, August 08, 2008

The 2nd Annual Dream Big Festival will be held from 10 am to 2 pm on Saturday, Aug. 9, 2008 at Jordan Valley Park in downtown Springfield. The event, designed for children kindergarten through 5th grade, is meant to focus children’s energy on the creative arts through a series of activities to be held throughout the day.

Events will include the creation of the Global Peace Tiles project funded by the Springfield Regional Arts Council and coordinated by local artist, Michele Lucas. Other activities include Springfield Symphony’s musical petting zoo, sidewalk chalk, Y Arts Academy Y-Jam, drama and face painting with Springfield Little Theatre, making masks and food puppets, a bounce house, and sitting at the potter’s wheel with the Claymobile. Also featured will be multi-cultural performances by the local Capoeira group featuring a visiting world-renowned Brazilian Capoeira artist, Mauro de Freitas Valadão, as well as Grupo Latinoamericano.

Children that complete four of these activities also will be given a free ice skating pass to be used that day until 4:00 p.m. at the Media Com Ice Park, courtesy of the Springfield-Greene County Parks Department. The first 1,000 children will receive a coloring book and crayons with designs by other R-12 students.

The Springfield Police & Fire Department will be present for interaction with the children. Free food also will be available for children.

Partners for this event include Springfield-Greene County Parks Department, Springfield Public Schools, Springfield Regional Arts Council, Urban Neighborhoods Alliance, Urban Districts Alliance, Springfield-Greene County Library, Ozarks Regional YMCA and Hand in Hand Ministries.
