Monday, August 11, 2008
The Creamery Writers' Workshop has scheduled two well-known writers to speak at its weekly meetings: Sarah Overstreet, local journalist, will speak this Thursday, Aug. 14, and Jennifer DiCamillo, award-winning novelist, will speak on August 28. The workshops are held every Thursday in the Creamery Arts Center from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and are free and open to all writers, regardless of age or genre. Sarah Overstreet is a graduate of Willard High School and Missouri State University where she majored in English education and minored in art. She was a reporter and columnist at the then Springfield Daily News from 1979 to 1987, then a consumer reporter for KSPR-TV and Public Access Coordinator and talk-show host at TeleCable. As a syndicated newspaper columnist for United Media, she founded the Southwest issouri Speakers Bureau in 1990, then came to the News-Leader in 1994 as associate editorial page editor where she is presently a columnist. Overstreet has a children's personalized book business, My Own Books. Jennifer DiCamillo is an award-winning writer, poet, playwright, and motivational speaker with over 130 writing awards, and more than 30 books under contract which is most interesting when considering she’s only been writing professionally for five years. Her shorter works can be found in: Amazon Shorts, Cup of Comfort for Women in Love, Cup of Comfort for Cat Lovers, Unbelievable Stories, Stride Magazine (UK), Storyteller Magazine (US), Ozarks Magazine, True Confessions, Taj Mahal Review (India), and others. Both writers will share tips on writing techniques and how to get published in their areas of expertise. On Aug. 21, those who attend the CWW will take part in some challenging in-class writing excercises.
