Since we are unable to host groups of students at the Museum, we are sending a little of the Museum to them! This fall, teachers can order class sets of take-home project bags for their students, free of charge.
Teachers can choose from 4 different projects, each inspired by an artist or object in our collection. Every project bag contains an artist bio, guiding questions, and vocabulary, as well as for instructions and all the materials needed to complete an art project.
As of early December - 2090 project bags have gone out to students at 19 schools. In a typical year, every Springfield Public Schools 5th grader visits the Museum on a field trip. This year, they would have seen Eye to I, a show of artists’ self-portraits organized by the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. Instead, 2100 5th graders will receive a sketchbook and color reproductions of images from the show paired with sketchbook prompts written by artists and educators from our community, as well as a few other supplies. We hope these resources will encourage students to come see the show and to develop their own personal drawing or writing practice.
