SRAC Job Openings: Teaching Artists

 

The Springfield Regional Arts Council is seeking contract Teaching Artists for our Growing Up in the Arts program.

Job Summary 

An independent contractor position, the Teaching Artist’s (TA) role is to create and execute educational arts programs (virtually at this time) for schools, childcare centers, community centers, and the community-at-large. The TA plays a critical role in the success of the program by developing content for students of all backgrounds. Students are grouped by age and grade level, the primary participants being K-5th grade. Our TAs are experienced in creating welcoming learning environments, modeling positive behavior, and supporting participant accomplishments, no matter how large or small. The TAs may need to interact with community partner administrators or other teachers as needed, but will primarily report to the Director of Programs and Exhibitions. 

Successful TAs should have demonstrated instructional experience in at least one of the following disciplines: 

  • Visual Art
  • Music
  • Theatre/Improv
  • Dance 
  • Poetry/Creative Writing
  • Film/Media Arts

Job Description:

Successful TAs will:

  • Work independently to develop 1-hour lesson plans for a given age range and art medium or media.
  • Set their own schedule to record and demonstrate art lessons after completing the introductory training.
  • Assist in evaluation of student successes
  • Take attendance for live events

Each lesson provided by the TAs will include: 

  • One-hour recorded or in-person lessons
  • Written lesson plan and presentation transcript
  • Materials lists (subject to SRAC approval)
  • Demonstration of at least one the National Cores Arts Standards: 
    • Creating, Performing/Presenting/Producing, Responding, or Connecting 

Candidate Expectations:

Successful TAs will:

  • Be professional, comfortable with public speaking and/or recording
  • Be comfortable with Microsoft/Google Suite to communicate remotely with the Director of Programs and Exhibitions
  • Able to work independently
  • Knowledgeable of art pedagogy 
  • Able to complete a clean background check (provided by SRAC)
  • Able to provide a list of availability for instruction or recording
  • Have access to transportation to and from the site of instruction

What the SRAC will provide: 

  • Space for recording along with the recording equipment
  • Administration support and established partnerships with community organizations
  • Art supplies within an established budget

Salary & Schedule 

The anticipated rate of pay is $20/hour. The SRAC does not guarantee minimum income, hours, or number of students scheduled for lessons.
