Sonya Wise is a native of Southwest Missouri. Wise exhibited a strong penchant for drawing and creating from a young age and that fascination has continued throughout her life.
Although Wise paints and exhibits a variety of subject matter, portrait and figurative art attracts her. An intense study of human anatomy has increased her interest in the human form. That, along with capturing a feeling in a single moment, both expression and movement, is challenging and exhilarating to her.
Wise is motivated by others reactions to artwork of all types. Being a long-time Docent for the Springfield Art Museum, she channels that motivation of the experience of interacting with other observers views about the works into her own pieces.
Wise strives to connect with her viewer. Admiration for old masters and their techniques have greatly influenced her stylistically.
I have always been motivated by others perception of artwork. As a long-time Docent for the Springfield Art Museum, I channel that motivation of the experience of interaction with artwork into my own pieces.
My media of choice is oil. I love how the creamy texture mixes and it allows for unique blending. Admiration for old masters definitely is an influence. I paint a monochromatic painting of the entire picture. Then, I start laying in color. Later, the ghosting resonates through to the surface. Many of my portraits begin in a monochromatic painting of green. This technique was used by renaissance painters and was called Verdaccio. By extending the original monochromatic painting color into the background it helps to unify the painting as a whole.
Portraits and figurative art attracts me, though my artwork is eclectic. I always strive to connect with the viewer in some way. Perhaps a familiar feeling surfaces from a time in life or the observation of that emotion in someone else.
